A man described as an innocent bystander was shot and killed inside a downtown Reading hotel after a late-night altercation turned deadly, authorities said.
Hamlet Vargas, 46, of Fairfield, Ohio, has been charged after the shooting inside the DoubleTree by Hilton on Penn Street early Sunday, April 5, according to police and court records.
Vargas was taken into custody at the scene and arraigned before District Judge Clarissa Johnson, resulting in his commitment to Berks County Jail without bail, as shown in court documents.

Taiquan Cullum, a 35-year-old Hempstead man, was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for the murder of Paul LaRue, the Nassau County District Attorney’s office said.
LaRue, 36, was shot dead while sitting in his car at the intersection of Clinton Street and Fulton Avenue in the early hours of July 28, 2019, according to authorities. He was not involved in the prior attack on Cullum, investigators said.
